About Dr. Purser
Constance (Connie) Purser, M.D. has practiced both inpatient and outpatient medicine for the past 9 years in both academic and non-academic settings. She is board certified in Internal Medicine. She has been involved in the medical field since she was a teenager in Iowa, working in a nursing home before entering nursing school. She practiced as a registered nurse in critical care for 8 years before entering medical school at Wake Forest’s Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She was honored to be invited into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for physicians and also given the award for Outstanding Performance in Internal Medicine. She then trained in Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital/University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. There she was honored with the award for outstanding performance in the field of geriatrics and asked to serve as chief resident. For the last several years, Dr. Purser worked in both the clinic setting and as a hospitalist (inpatient physician) in a large teaching hospital in the Northeast. Dr. Purser has always had a vacation home in Sarasota, now her permanent residence, which she shares with her husband of 20+ years, who is himself a Radiation Oncologist.
Dr. Purser spent her entire residency and training caring for adults and very much enjoys being a primary care physician. Unlike a family practice physician, she does not treat children or handle pregnancies. Internal Medicine training is a rigorous program that focuses on health maintenance, detailed history and physical exam - as well as the complexities of adult medicine. From sore throats and poison ivy to kidney disease and heart failure, a considerable amount of time is spent on evidence-based practice and management. She can order your labs, manage chronic conditions, diagnose new issues, analyze your risk for future disease, manage diabetes, hypertension, etc... as well as perform EKG's, pap smears, and physical exams. She has always had a special interest in weight management and stress management as well as geriatrics and hospice/palliative care.
